Yes, the tool accounts for the annual nitrogen released through the natural breakdown of soil organic matter, but only if there is a loss of soil carbon due to changes in land use or management. This includes nitrogen lost through leaching and direct emissions. Additionally, the tool follows the IPCC 2019 guidelines to account for nitrogen that escapes into the air (i.e. volatilisation), direct and leached emissions when fertilisers are applied. Therefore, soil N2O emissions are considered only when there are fertiliser inputs or carbon losses from the soil, as it requires these inputs to calculate the emissions accurately.
