Can I account for the time the manure is stored in different systems?
We do not consider timing currently in manure emission calculations. The values used in the Cool Farm Tool are average annual IPCC emission factors. While there is a link between emissions and duration of storage, it is a lot more complex to estimate the emissions in this detail and would make the tool less easy to apply.
If there are multiple consecutive systems for managing manure, this is for the user to decide on how to enter. Choosing the prevalent management type that is used for most of the time of the assessment period could be an option. You could also use the percentages of the tool to reflect multiple consecutive systems by time spent (relative to assessment period e.g. 1 year). This is far from ideal as the amount of N will be different by the time it reaches the second/ third system etc. But until we have the flow and N/C balance we can’t give any option that is suitable.
